Boulevard Of Broken Dreams - Green Day (Music Video)
Lyrics:
"Boulevard Of Broken Dreams"
I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's home to me and I walk alone
I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
When the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a...
My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'til then I walk alone
Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah, aaah-ah,
Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah
I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line
Of the edge and where I walk alone
Read between the lines
What's fucked up when everything's alright
Check my vital signs
To know I'm still alive and I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a...
My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'til then I walk alone
Ah-ah, ah-ah, ah-ah, aaah-ah
Ah-ah, ah-ah
I walk alone
I walk a...
I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams
When the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk a...
My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow heart's the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'til then I walk alone...
The video begins with a scene which looks like something from the 'wild west' with thin bushes and tumble weed etc. They also shoot broken down wooden houses in the background which is suppposed to symbolise the 'broken dreams'.
Also with reference to costume they are wearing the same suits as the ones in the link video of Holiday and the idea was this video to be the hangover after the night before. They have done this effectively as they have distressed the outfits they are wearing and have made them look scruffier.
They also use a zoom in and out of the lead singer which I assume is to create a reaction from the audience to set the atmosphere.
There is then a cut to a change scenery to them in what looks like the inside of a garage which has been created to look like this. I think they have done this due to the fact that when they were young stereotypically teenagers play in 'garage' bands and hope for fame and fortune e.g. their dream. They are also playing their instruments and are miming which is relevent to the song.
The lighting used is mainly high key which is made to look natural as they are walking through the 'boulevard ofbroken dreams' which I think works really well.
There is then an instrumental in the non diagetic sound which is the song. It cuts to another scene with projection and the camera tracks through characters which look like homeless people who have lost their way etc. which fits to the theme of the song. There are also burning cans which is a very americanised theme of 'hobos' so we can immediatly tell the band is American.
As the song comes to a climax they cut back to the band and there is coloured confetti coming from the celling which I think has no real meaning I think it's to show the point of where the song and storyline has been building up to.
There is also use of out of focus camera shots which either could be to do with depth of field or are deliberatly to create the effect of the metaphorical loneliness as he can't see or feel like he's with anyone else.
