Give Me Novacaine by Green Day
Summary:
The theme of the song is numbing the pain of heartbreak. In the video we are going to explore a stereotypical couple in trouble with the main female numbing her pain with Novacaine and the idea of freeing herself from the pain.
We are going to start the narrative with a split screen of the couple individually getting ready for a party. They will both be in their bedrooms and will be looking into ‘mirrors’ which will be from the cameras perspective. Then what will happen is the female (Sophie) will receive a text from her boyfriend (Andy) saying that they should end their relationship. There then will be a slow motion shot of her throwing the mobile phone at the wall and when it hits the wall that is when the music will come in.
We then get a POV shot of her walking out of the door and down the street. In this part there may be a change of angles or just one of her feet. She arrives at his house and hits the door and screaming for him to let her in (this will be muted as the music is the only sound we can hear). We will then cut to the other side of the door where he is this head against the door. She then throws her necklace (with the Green Day logo on it) and walks off crying.
Then she walks into the gig/party just in time for the chorus. Overlapping with ghost layers are 3 different frames, one of the band (what the character can see), another of her taking drugs (symbolic for the Novacaine which numbs the pain), and another of her sitting with his eyes shut.
The 3 frames blur back to one and she sees someone who she thinks is her now ex-boyfriend kissing another girl, and she pulls them apart to find that it isn’t him at all. She goes to a payphone (maybe outside in a telephone box) or house phone and dials; this then again layers with a ghost like effect with a frame of her sitting on the floor (maybe in the box) with the phone and chord hanging by her head.
We then get a chorus with close ups of the bands instruments (so we can’t see their faces apart from the lead singer) and the occasional glance at the girl leaving the phone.
The male character has followed her and sees her leave the phone. She goes home, and as the guitar solo is happening (we get views of both the guitarist playing and the characters jumping from one to the other) she is in his room putting everything of his into a box such as photographs and tickets. She then sits in his window holding the box and he walks towards his house. He then empties the box almost over his head and we see some of the photos. He looks up and she then notices him there. She goes downstairs and he tries to give back the necklace, and it ends with the band playing.
Format:
The camera we will use to film will be the Sony A1 Camcorder – HVR- A1E.
We will probably use YouTube for distribution as it’s easily accessible.
Duration:
The video will probably be about 4 minutes long as the song is 4 minutes and 25 seconds and in 4 minutes it will give us enough time to have the narration at the beginning.
Intended Audience:
My intended target audience is ages 15-35, based on my audience research into Kerrang! and YouTube statistics. The audience is likely to be predominantly male because of the genre. There will be a lot of variation in the audience as the fan base is so large.
Style:
The genre of this video will come from the music genre which is Rock/Punk/Alternative. The video is a visual narrative storyline and will include a band which is what our target audience like due to our interviews and questionnaire. The video will be mainly symbolic like the song is as it will tackle issues of teenage life with heartbreak, drugs, sex and parties which will also allow us to follow stereotypes of this genre.
The influences for this video are directors who have directed Green Day videos in the past such as Sam Beyer and Marc Webb. There are also other influences to our video as it is very stereotypical for the type of song we are dealing with which deals with matters of love and heartbreak.
Rationale:
This production is to be relevant to the target audience because our characters are sticking to stereotype with styling and activities that they do (such as go to gigs). Our main aim is for the video to be enjoyable for our target audience and to show the symbolic reason for the song using a visual and narrative storyline. Green Day fans will be interested as it is quite a well-known song from the album which is why it’s good to try and develop a video for it as people who like this genre of music a generally interested in music videos.
Feasibility:
It should be relatively easy to be successful with our video as we have already considered locations, availability of equipment and actors. Our cast are happy to co-operate with our project and are trustworthy which is why we chose them for the video. We also chose them due to their individual look which is suitable for this genre. I think that production will run smoothly so we will have no issues with meeting deadlines.
Budget:
Things that we have to consider for the budget for this project are:
- Travel cost (for actors/band members and ourselves)
- Costume (for actors and band members)
- Props (for actors and band members)
